Inspiration
According to the Canadian Paediatric Society and its 2024 study, literacy rates among children under 15 have declined dramatically since 2000, with currently 1 in 7 students having a below-average reading level. One of our teammates, Deren, is taking a minor in Linguistics and brought up this issue, stemming from the lack of proper phonics instruction at an earlier age.
What it does
Our project addresses this ongoing problem by creating a fun game for kids to practice their phonics. It makes learning more interesting by using popular brainrot characters to capture kids' attention, while ensuring they recognize phonics patterns.
How we built it
We built this project with the use of HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the frontend and purely JavaScript for the backend, as well as implemented MongoDB Atlas for a database. For the audio features, such as the voice recognition and speech-to-text feature, we used the integrated Web Speech API in JS.
Challenges we ran into
We are a team of first time hackathon participants, so our main challenge was figuring out how to create an impactful project that we would be passionate about. Since we are all beginners, we struggled to bring our creative ideas to life and to implement a substantial project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have completed a project with all our original intended ideas.
What we learned
We learned how to implement Speech Recognition functionality and work with databases.
What's next for Phonics with Brainrot
We would like to implement more levels with more interactive phonics exercises and maybe even more brainrot characters as internet trends evolve.
