Inspiration
As a US-based developer, I watched friends/family overpay $50+/month for phone plans they didn’t need—many stuck in pricey contracts or unused data/call limits. I wanted to build a tool that turns vague "I’m overpaying" frustration into concrete, actionable savings for everyday Americans.
What it does
PhonePlanOptimizer analyzes your monthly calls, texts, and data usage to match you with the cheapest US carrier/MVNO plans. It compares individual/family plan costs, flags loyalty pricing discrepancies, and calculates annual savings—all with clear, visual breakdowns.
How we built it
First, I mapped core user needs (usage analysis → plan comparison → recommendations). I built a responsive React frontend with TailwindCSS for UI, used Chart.js for usage/ cost charts, and GSAP for smooth animations. Backend logic (plan matching, savings calculations) ran on Node.js, with Firebase for data storage and carrier APIs for plan data aggregation.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was refining the plan-matching logic—balancing "lowest cost" with "sufficient resources" (avoiding overage fees). I also struggled with making complex family plan cost breakdowns intuitive, and optimizing animations for mobile performance without losing visual appeal.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a tool that cuts through carrier jargon to deliver clear savings (avg. 20%+ monthly reduction). The UI makes complex cost comparisons easy to digest, and the loyalty price alert feature helps users negotiate better rates—something no generic plan comparator offers.
What we learned
I mastered balancing technical precision (savings calculations: $monthly = current - recommended, $annual = $monthly × 12) with user-centric design. I also learned how to aggregate and normalize messy carrier plan data into consistent, usable formats—and the importance of mobile-first animation optimization.
What's next for this project
We’ll add real-time carrier plan updates (via API integrations), expand to include 5G plan filtering, and build a mobile app version. We also want to add a "negotiation tool" that auto-generates scripts to contact carriers about loyalty pricing—turning savings insights into direct action.
