Inspiration
We were heavily inspired by Streetpass from the Nintendo 3DS. We wanted to bring the experience of receiving other user profiles to modern phones.
What it does
Our app creates and stores user profiles and, using bluetooth passes them to other users nearby without the deliberate intervention of the user. It's designed for large events, like conferences, where many people interact but don't necessarily exchange contact information. Our current user profile stores a name, pronouns, and a short bio in which a user can share their contact info or just a bit about them. On the next page, the list of all received passes is recorded for future reference.
How we built it
We developed our app in Android Studio using Kotlin Multiplatform. Each team member worked to their strengths while always maintaining active communication. We depended on git to make sure we were all working with the most recent version of the project and have freedom to experiment without putting the project at risk.
Challenges we ran into
We mainly faced a lack of familiarity with Android Studio and Kotlin Multiplatform causing significant slowdowns. Some of our team members were especially inexperienced with programming larger codebases and struggled with certain functionalities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of having a functional project, especially our Bluetooth functionality. It is also especially exciting since some of our team members are less experienced with hackathons in general.
What we learned
We learned how to use Android Studio and write Kotlin code. Included in this was logic for how to write code designed for both Android and iOS and how to implement various classes across folders and file types.
What's next for Phonepass
Since we used Kotlin Multiplatform, we are set up to be able to implement our app for iOS users. In the future, our user profiles will likely include profile images. We also intend to polish our UI and refactor the backend to create a sturdier app overall.
