Inspiration
The inspiration behind PhoneBot came from a simple everyday problem — losing our smartphones inside our own homes. Almost everyone experiences this frustration daily, wasting valuable time searching under pillows, sofas, or inside rooms. Existing solutions like “Find My Phone” require another device, internet connection, or additional hardware such as Bluetooth trackers. We wanted to create a completely free, offline, hands-free, and voice-first solution that allows users to simply call out to their phone and instantly locate it.
What We Learned
During the development of PhoneBot, we learned how voice recognition systems work in offline environments and how smartphones can respond intelligently without relying on cloud services. We also explored concepts like speech detection, audio feedback systems, background services, and user accessibility design. The project helped us improve our problem-solving, UI/UX design, and real-world application development skills.
How We Built the Project
We built PhoneBot as a lightweight mobile application focused on simplicity and speed. The app continuously listens for a predefined voice command in offline mode and responds with sound, vibration, or flashlight alerts to help users locate their phone quickly. The system was designed with minimal battery usage and an easy-to-use interface so that users of all ages can access it comfortably.
Challenges We Faced
One of the biggest challenges was implementing reliable offline voice recognition while maintaining low battery consumption. We also faced difficulties in reducing false voice detections caused by background noise. Another challenge was ensuring the app worked smoothly across different smartphone devices and Android versions. Despite these obstacles, we successfully created a practical and accessible solution that solves a common daily problem.
