Problem
Sam is a teacher, a dedicated one at that. Sam registered 3 bright students in his class (Student-A, Student-B, Student-C)in his class for a science competition (An international competition)they competed in the regionals, state level. They were doing great, scaling through with excellence, then were chosen to represent Nigeria at the National level, during the competition they were asked some questions which at their level were expected to know, but they had no idea what to answer. They got eliminated, when they got back to school, Sam asked them "What questions did you guys fail?" they answered, Sam realized that he taught the topic but in the outdated textbook he used to create his lesson content, that info wasn't contained there.
Solution
Being able to point out the problem, I and my team members came up Phoenix. Phoenix is a web application that is created to tackle one of the fundamental problems facing the education sector in Nigeria - Lack of access to quality resources. The app is created with the intention of helping teachers/tutors/instructors in the junior secondary level in creating good content for their lessons by giving them access to many good quality resources that provide detailed information about different STEM subjects in this level.
Impact
- It presents to the teacher the opportunity to create great content for their students.
- Makes content creation easier for teachers.
- Helps teachers teach the latest trends in their subject area.
- Helps students skill up and enables them compete favorably amongst their peers in developed countries.
In Comparison With Existing Solutions
Phoenix is the first indigenous application built by Nigerians for teachers to improve her educational system by providing up-to-date teaching resources.
Challenges We Ran Into
During the creation of phoenix, we ran into some couple of challenges such as: Syncing up with the speed at which Naijahacks was going, Light issues, Acquiring of Data to ensure that we are always online so as not to miss some very vital information, Sometimes communication was a challenge as during task assignment to each team member, when it's time of submission, sometimes we experienced the inability to reach out to some members, sometimes due to network issues, etc.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of all the research and information we were able to provide through this product. Additionally, we were very successful in collaboration and each team member contributing equally, each team member contributing to the best of their ability round the clock. We are very proud of our product, its potential, and its long term impact on the education sector.
What we learned
Loads of things were taught, online meetings, Bizskills courses, coding training for beginners (i'm a beneficiary), How to pitch a business concept to potential investors, how to work in a team, how to organize a team, accomplishing a lot in a short while, starting a business, ideation, brainstorming, and so much more thanks to Naijahacks .
Whats next for Phoenix
Phoenix has a lot of potential for potential growth, for now we are started with some basic features which would be upgraded to include other features such as: Online teachers chat-rooms to enable teachers-teachers communication to foster support on any issues faced during teaching, answers to questions, online seminars for teachers.
What We Believe in
"An investment in Education pays the highest interest!" A building with a weak foundation is bound to fall and so for education to produce the desired development and growth, the foundation must be strong, hence the need for educationist, parents, teachers, students and other stakeholders in education to put in their full support both at the foundation and construction level of education.
