Inspiration
The inspiration behind PhishingForScams stemmed from the increasing sophistication and malevolence of phishing attacks, particularly among older stakeholders. This problem was even prevalent for family members in our group; therefore, the need for proactive measures to protect users from falling victim to scams and malware was clear. By harnessing machine learning techniques and combining them with cybersecurity principles, we aimed to develop an intuitive interface that empowers users to identify, mitigate and resolve potential threats in their email communications. For younger, more tech-savvy stakeholders, the project aims to reduce clutter and engender a more streamlined email environment.
What it does
PhishingForScams is an innovative interface that leverages natural language processing (NLP) techniques and machine learning (ML) models to predict the likelihood an email is spam. The system integrates seamlessly with Python and Kafka, providing users with real-time insights into the confidence level of an email being spam. Upon analysis, PhishingForScams dynamically redirects users based on the ML model's predictions, thereby enhancing email security and reducing the risk of falling victim to phishing attacks.
How we built it
We built PhishingForScams by combining expertise in machine learning, cybersecurity, and software development. Initially, we utilized Python for its robust ML libraries and Kafka for its efficient event streaming capabilities. We trained the ML model using a public dataset of labelled phishing emails, implementing NLP techniques to extract malicious features and identify harmful patterns . The interface was designed to be user-friendly, providing clear indications of the confidence level in an email's legitimacy. Additionally, we implemented a feedback mechanism to continuously improve the ML model based on user interactions, eliminating the need for manual redeployment.
Challenges we ran into
During the development process, we encountered several challenges that required creative problem-solving and collaboration. Integrating the ML model with Kafka for real-time predictions presented technical hurdles, particularly in optimizing performance and ensuring scalability. Additionally, fine-tuning the NLP algorithms to accurately detect subtle indicators of phishing emails posed a significant challenge. The former was solved with perseverance and extensive collaboration across disciplines and experiences. The latter involved iteratively testing a variety of neural network programs, and utilizing data science techniques to combine multiple public datasets and therefore increase sample size. TensorFlow evidently proved the best service, accomplishing an impressive 99.32% accuracy during supervised learning of a labelled dataset.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have successfully developed PhishingForScams, an innovative solution at the intersection of ML and cybersecurity. Our system provides users with actionable insights to identify and mitigate phishing threats effectively. Furthermore, the implementation of a self-improving ML model based on user feedback represents a significant accomplishment, streamlining the process of enhancing email security without manual intervention.
What we learned
Through the development of PhishingForScams, we gained invaluable insights into the complexities of integrating ML techniques with cybersecurity applications. We deepened our understanding of NLP algorithms, ML model optimization, and real-time event streaming technologies. Moreover, the iterative nature of our approach taught us the importance of adaptability and continuous improvement in addressing evolving cybersecurity challenges.
What's next for PhishingForScams
Moving forward, we envision several exciting avenues for further enhancing PhishingForScams. Firstly, we plan to explore advanced ML algorithms and ensemble techniques to improve the accuracy and robustness of the prediction model. Additionally, we aim to incorporate additional features such as anomaly detection and user behavior analysis to bolster email security . Furthermore, expanding the scope of PhishingForScams to other communication channels beyond email, such as messaging platforms and social media, is on our roadmap. Overall, we are committed to continuously refining and evolving PhishingForScams to stay ahead of emerging cybersecurity threats and empower users with robust protection against phishing scams.
