Inspiration
Motivated by the influx of old people falling for phishing scams and the injustice done to them.
What it does
The website uses Gmail API to keep track of a user's emails within 12 hours, and runs some python scripts to determine the likelihood of the email being a scam using social engineering and discrepancies in the email's info as well as running further investigations on data breaches connected to the user's email address.
How we built it
Through connecting 4 API's, we connected the Supabase DB with a python script, the "Have I been Pawned" service as well as using Gmail's API to retrieve email content to run through the script.
Challenges we ran into
Definitely connecting all the API's with varying levels of effective and helpful documentation(looking at you, Gmail API) while using different languages
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite the need to simplify the logic scripts for the phishing checks over the 25 hours, we are quite proud of our ingenuity with coming up with solutions to achieve similarly ranked results through simpler methodology. Additionally, simply managing to present a working project by the end of the session has been impressive on it's own.
What we learned
To plan and prepare earlier and decide on the type of program we would like to develop prior to the event rather than 3 hours in.
What's next for PhishHook
Simply scalability and better UX
