Inspiration

I wanted to create a cybersecurity learning tool that breaks away from the mundane and feels approachable, engaging, and (let’s be real) a little fabulous! Inspired by the need for relatable and fun educational tools, I dreamed up a playful yet effective way to teach phishing awareness.

What it does

My app, PhishFemme, is a game that helps users identify phishing emails while embracing a vibrant and modern aesthetic. Players analyze simulated emails, spot the red flags, and get immediate feedback—learning to stay vigilant against cyber threats in the cutest way possible.

How I built it

I used Python and PyQt5 to design an intuitive and visually appealing user interface (UI/UX). Every feature, from the scoring mechanism to the phishing tips, was crafted with both functionality and style in mind. I also incorporated gamification elements to keep users engaged.

Challenges I ran into

Finding the right balance between aesthetics and functionality was tricky. Making sure the app looked fun without compromising on usability and cybersecurity accuracy took some trial and error. Refining the phishing simulator's logic to feel realistic while being beginner-friendly required careful tuning.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I successfully transformed a traditionally serious topic into something accessible and enjoyable. The app doesn’t just educate—it makes users excited about cybersecurity. Plus, I’m proud of the sleek UI design and the positive feedback from initial testers!

What I learned

  • The importance of combining good design with educational content.
  • How to implement user-friendly design principles in PyQt5.
  • Balancing fun and functionality in a cybersecurity tool.

*What's next *

I plan to:

  1. Add more levels of difficulty to cater to both beginners and advanced users.
  2. Introduce social sharing for scores to encourage friendly competition.
  3. Expand the phishing scenarios to include text messages and social media scams.
  4. Publish the app for wider public use and partner with schools or organizations for training purposes.
