Inspiration:
It was raining outside, and I thought about how I won't be able to skate until all the puddles at Cecil B. Moore Park dry up. It usually takes days for a puddle to disappear at the park, which is why people take matters into their own hands and unclog the drains themselves. I created this game to inform others about clogged drains and how anyone (depending on how big the flood/puddle is) can unclog a drain to prevent floods in Philly.
What it does:
You spawn into the world with a rake in your inventory. You use the rake and click leaf piles to unclog drains, while it also sucks up trash around it.
How we built it:
This game was built/scripted in Roblox Studio using Lua. All buildings, tools, etc. were made from scratch. (except the trees)
Challenges we ran into:
This isn't my first time seeing Lua code, but it is my first time using it. I had difficulties in getting the drain to work. There were times when leaves wouldn't disappear after clicking, the water wouldn't drain, trash wouldn't spawn, and so much more. Though, after many trials and errors, the rough draft made it all worth it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
I'm proud of how the draft turned out. Even if it isn't much, it's a start. I never thought I'd be able to build 3D models and even try to replicate Cecil B. Moore Park in Roblox. I designed the weather, set up sound effects for walking and raking using ElevenLabs, wrote the computer code, and now I have a working game I created on my own. I'm more so proud of myself for not giving up.
What we learned:
After this project, I have a much better grasp of Lua and how Roblox Studio works as a whole.
What's next for Philly Drainer:
I'm thinking about continuing this game in my free time. I've been itching to learn how to model in Blender for any builds I might need in the future. I want to finish modeling Cecil and maybe add more places like City Hall, Penn's Landing, and any others I've already explored.
