Inspiration
Philippine mobile numbers often leave users wondering which network a number belongs to. Prefix information can be scattered across outdated lists and confusing sources, while Mobile Number Portability makes it important to distinguish between an original carrier and a current network. The goal behind What Network It Is was to create a simple, independent reference that makes Philippine mobile prefix information easier to understand and access.
What it does
The project lets users enter a Philippine mobile number or four-digit prefix and identify its original assigning carrier. It provides information such as the carrier, sub-brand, account type, supported network technology, and prefix allocation year.
The platform covers major Philippine mobile brands including Globe, Smart, Talk 'N Text, Sun Cellular, DITO, and GOMO. It also provides a complete prefix directory, carrier profiles, telecom guides, historical information, FAQs, and clear explanations of Mobile Number Portability.
How I built it
The project was built as a modern web application using Next.js 15.4, React, JavaScript, and Tailwind CSS. The platform combines a structured prefix dataset with searchable pages and an easy-to-use lookup interface.
Nginx is used as the reverse proxy, while Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Google AdSense support analytics, site management, and monetization. The content architecture was designed around authoritative prefix pages, carrier directories, educational guides, and supporting FAQs.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was organizing a large amount of Philippine telecom information into a structure that remains simple for everyday users. Prefixes can have different carrier brands, historical backgrounds, technologies, and allocation years, so presenting the information clearly required careful organization.
Another important challenge was handling Mobile Number Portability. A prefix can identify the carrier that originally received the allocation, but it cannot always identify the subscriber's current network. Making this distinction clear without confusing users became an important part of the project.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of creating a focused reference platform that combines a practical lookup tool with a comprehensive Philippine mobile prefix directory. Instead of providing only a carrier name, the project gives users additional context about each prefix and its history.
The project also emphasizes transparency and verification, with information reviewed against regulatory and carrier sources and clear explanations where data may be uncertain. Each prefix is treated as an authoritative resource rather than creating multiple pages for slightly different versions of the same search query.
What I learned
This project taught me how important data organization, accuracy, and user intent are when building an information-focused website. A useful lookup tool needs more than a database; users also need context that explains what the result actually means.
I also learned how technical architecture and content architecture can work together. Using React and Next.js made it possible to build a responsive lookup experience while maintaining structured pages that can serve users searching for specific prefixes, carriers, and telecom questions.
What's next for Philippine Mobile Network Lookup
The next stage is to continue expanding and verifying the prefix database as Philippine telecom allocations and carrier services change. I also want to improve the lookup experience, expand educational guides, and make carrier and prefix comparisons even easier to understand.
The long-term goal is to make What Network It Is a trusted, regularly maintained reference for anyone who needs clear information about Philippine mobile networks and prefixes.
