Inspiration

We wanted to build something that could help people solve small problems in their everyday lives without needing complicated tools or technical knowledge.

The idea behind SpotFix came from noticing how often people come across small problems in their surroundings but don't know who to contact or how to get them fixed. A broken streetlight, damaged road, overflowing bin, water leak, or other local issue can easily be ignored because reporting it can feel like too much effort.

We wanted to make that process much simpler.

What it does

SpotFix lets people report problems around them and turn them into clear, actionable issues.

Instead of having to figure out which department or service is responsible, users can describe the problem, provide its location, and submit it through a simple interface.

The goal is to make reporting a local problem feel as easy as sending a message.

How we built it

We built SpotFix as a web application with a focus on keeping the experience simple and accessible.

The frontend was built using modern web technologies and designed to work well across different screen sizes. We focused heavily on making the main actions obvious so that someone can understand how to use the application without needing instructions.

We also designed the application around the idea that a report should contain enough useful information to actually help someone take action.

What we learned

One of the biggest things we learned was that building a useful product is not just about adding features.

It is about removing unnecessary steps.

We spent a lot of time thinking about how someone who has never used the application before would understand what to do. This helped us focus on the user experience instead of making the project unnecessarily complicated.

We also learned how different parts of a web application have to work together to turn a simple idea into something people can actually use.

Challenges we faced

The biggest challenge was finding the right balance between functionality and simplicity.

It is easy to keep adding features, but every additional step can make an application harder to use. We therefore focused on the core problem first and built the experience around making that problem easier to solve.

Another challenge was making the interface clear enough that the purpose of the application is immediately understandable.

Why SpotFix matters

Small problems can have a surprisingly large effect on a community when they remain unresolved.

SpotFix is built around a simple idea:

If reporting a problem takes less than a minute, more people might actually report it.

We hope SpotFix can make it easier for people to speak up about the problems they see around them and help turn those reports into action.
