PharmiGo – Turning a Real-Life Problem into a Solution That Saves Time, Improves Access to Healthcare, and Helps Stop Self-Medication
Before you take two steps, check PharmiGo first.
The idea behind PharmiGo was born from a personal experience I lived through on March 7, 2026.
On that day, my wife was suffering from severe ear pain. We went to a local health center, where a healthcare professional prescribed a medication called DISOWAX. After the consultation, we returned home, and I immediately went out to find the medicine.
I started my search at pharmacies in our neighborhood of Kinama, Bujumbura, Burundi. After visiting several pharmacies without success, I continued searching in nearby neighborhoods.
From 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., I traveled from one pharmacy to another, spending time, energy, and transportation money while my wife remained at home waiting for the treatment she urgently needed.
Eventually, a pharmacist friend called me to tell me that a pharmacy located in the neighboring district of Kamenge, on 14th Avenue, had the medication in stock. I immediately took a motorcycle taxi there and was finally able to buy it.
That was the moment I realized something fundamental.
The problem was not the lack of pharmacies. It was not the lack of the medicine either. The real problem was the lack of information. The medicine was available. A pharmacy already had it in stock. Yet, for several hours, I had no way of knowing where to find it.
That experience made me realize that patients should never have to spend their time and energy searching from one pharmacy to another. Their energy should be devoted to recovering.
Today, many people face exactly the same situation. They abandon their search because they are exhausted, discouraged, weakened by illness, or simply cannot afford additional transportation costs. Others eventually turn to self-medication, exposing themselves to serious health risks, inappropriate treatments, delayed recovery, and potentially life-threatening complications.
It was to solve this real problem that I imagined, designed, and developed PharmiGo.
What is PharmiGo?
PharmiGo is a digital healthcare platform that enables patients to quickly locate the nearest pharmacies that actually have the medicines they need.
By combining geolocation, real-time medicine availability, and direct connections with participating pharmacies, the platform allows users to identify where they can obtain their prescribed medication without wasting hours traveling from one pharmacy to another.
The mission is simple:
Help patients spend less time searching for medicines and more time recovering.
How Artificial Intelligence Enhances PharmiGo?
Artificial intelligence allows PharmiGo to become much more than a simple medicine search platform. AI can:
Analyze handwritten or printed medical prescriptions. Recognize and extract prescribed medications automatically. Correct spelling mistakes and typing errors. Normalize both brand names and generic drug names. Understand searches written in natural language. Assist patients in multiple languages. Recommend the most appropriate nearby pharmacies based on the patient's location and real-time medicine availability.
These capabilities significantly reduce errors, improve the user experience, and make access to prescribed treatments faster and easier.
Why I Built PharmiGo?
PharmiGo was not created as a school project or simply as a business idea.
It was born from a problem that I personally experienced. I imagined, designed, and developed this platform with one clear mission: To save patients time, improve access to healthcare, reduce unnecessary travel, and help stop self-medication.
Current Status
Today, PharmiGo is fully functional. However, the platform has not yet been deployed on a large scale due to limited financial resources.
My immediate objectives are to:
Complete the platform's infrastructure. Publicly launch PharmiGo under the pharmigo.afrique domain. Strengthen the platform's security and performance. Connect pharmacies across Burundi. Launch an initial pilot program with pharmacies in Bujumbura.
Why the OpenAI Hackathon Matters?
Participating in the OpenAI Hackathon represents an incredible opportunity to accelerate the development of PharmiGo. My goal is to integrate OpenAI technologies into the platform to improve intelligent prescription analysis, natural language understanding, medicine search, multilingual patient assistance, and the overall user experience.
The hackathon would also help me deploy PharmiGo publicly under the pharmigo.afrique domain, make it available to its first users, and prepare it for large-scale adoption.
Although PharmiGo already includes AI-assisted capabilities, participating in the OpenAI Hackathon would enable me to integrate OpenAI's advanced models to further improve the platform and maximize its impact.
Our Vision
My ambition is to make PharmiGo a trusted, accessible, and scalable healthcare platform capable of helping thousands of patients in Burundi and, eventually, millions of people across Africa gain faster access to the medicines they need.
I firmly believe that technology and artificial intelligence can save time, improve access to healthcare, help stop self-medication, and ultimately save lives.
