Inspiration
PharmaTrust was inspired by the growing concern over counterfeit medicines and the lack of transparency in pharmaceutical supply chains. We wanted to explore how blockchain could help make medicine tracking more reliable and trustworthy.
What it does
PharmaTrust tracks pharmaceutical batches through the supply chain using blockchain. It supports secure ownership transfers, parent-child batch traceability, and QR-based verification to help users verify a medicine's recorded history.
How we built it
We built PharmaTrust using Solidity, Polygon, Hardhat, and OpenZeppelin for smart contracts; React and Tailwind CSS for the frontend; Ethers.js for blockchain interaction; Express and MongoDB for backend services; and IPFS with Pinata for decentralized metadata storage. MetaMask enables wallet-based interaction.
Challenges we ran into
Designing batch relationships, integrating smart contracts with the frontend, managing blockchain transactions, and combining on-chain records with off-chain metadata were key challenges. We also had to consider how QR codes could be copied and how sensitive information should be protected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We brought blockchain tracking, batch hierarchy, ownership transfers, and QR-based verification together in one project. We are proud of creating a practical prototype that demonstrates how decentralized technology can support pharmaceutical traceability.
What we learned
We gained hands-on experience with smart contract development, blockchain integration, decentralized storage, and full-stack development. We also learned that traceability depends not only on technology but on trustworthy data entry and secure processes.
What's next for PharmaTrust
We aim to test the system more extensively, strengthen QR verification and access controls, improve the user experience, and explore integration with pharmaceutical standards and real-world supply chain partners. Our long-term goal is to help make medicine distribution safer and more transparent.
