Coming from a healthcare background with no formal software engineering degree, I wanted to build a practical tool for pharmacy education: PharmSim AI. My goal was to create a realistic patient simulator that lets students practice taking clinical histories while being protected by an independent, deterministic safety net.
What it does Engine: Roleplays realistic patient consultations (such as presenting with a drug induced dry cough from Lisinopril), withholding key red flags until the student asks targeted history taking questions.
How we built it :AI Patient Engine: Powered by nvidia/Llama-3.1-Nemotron-70B-Instruct hosted via Nebius Token Factory.
Safety Grounding: Built-in deterministic verification engine querying official openFDA RESTful endpoints.
Challenges we ran into As a Pharmacy student entering my very first hackathon, navigating web development, state management, and Git repository setups was a huge learning curve!
Technically, one of the biggest challenges was handling platform token limits during rapid prototyping on Bolt's free tier, which forced me to focus heavily on prompt architecture and clean code structure.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Building a Functional AI Healthcare App: Deploying a fully working web application for my very first hackathon as a pharmacy student.
Solving the AI Hallucination Gap: Creating a dual-agent architecture that pairs generative AI roleplay with real-time openFDA safety auditing. Overcoming Technical Constraints: Learning how to structure public GitHub repositories and deploy web apps from scratch.
What we learned : How to leverage open-source AI models (nvidia/Llama-3.1-Nemotron-70B-Instruct) hosted on Nebius Token Factory for healthcare simulation.
How to connect web applications to live medical REST APIs (openFDA). How to manage end-to-end project deployments independently.
What's next for Pharm sim : I plan to continue expanding the patient case library to cover pediatric and geriatric cases, add multi-drug allergy matrix checks, and refine the evaluation scorecard for pharmacy curriculum integration!
