Phantom Heist
Inspiration
Modern multiplayer strategy games often suffer from one fundamental problem: hidden information isn't actually hidden. Whether it's stream sniping, data mining, client-side exploits, or exposing sensitive game states on public blockchains, players can often gain unfair advantages before a match even begins.
The Midnight Hackathon inspired us to rethink competitive multiplayer gaming from the ground up. Instead of simply putting a game on a blockchain, we wanted to explore how confidential smart contracts could enable an entirely new genre of privacy-preserving games where strategy remains secret while fairness remains verifiable.
That idea became Phantom Heist.
What it does
Phantom Heist is a multiplayer stealth strategy game where players compete to execute the perfect museum heist.
Before the mission begins, each player secretly plans:
- Agent
- Equipment
- Entry point
- Escape route
- Mission path
- Tactical decisions
Unlike traditional multiplayer games, none of this information is visible to opponents.
Players commit their strategies privately, and once everyone has locked in their plans, the mission executes simultaneously. Every outcome is cryptographically verifiable while confidential game state remains protected.
The project also includes a dedicated Privacy Dashboard that clearly demonstrates the difference between:
Public State
- Game created
- Players joined
- Match started
- Winner
- Mission duration
- Verification status
Confidential State
- Mission path
- Equipment
- Entry point
- Escape route
- Future moves
- Tactical strategy
- Guard predictions
This showcases exactly why Midnight's confidential execution model is uniquely suited for competitive multiplayer games.
How we built it
Frontend
- Next.js 15
- React
- TypeScript
- Tailwind CSS
- shadcn/ui
- Framer Motion
- Zustand
Backend
- Node.js
- Modular service architecture
Blockchain Layer
The application is designed around a dedicated Midnight service abstraction responsible for:
- Wallet connection
- Match creation
- Strategy commitment
- Mission verification
- Match completion
Separating blockchain logic from UI allows the frontend to remain clean while making the confidential execution layer easily replaceable with production Midnight contracts.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge wasn't building a multiplayer gameāit was designing one that actually benefits from confidential smart contracts.
Many blockchain games simply store public state on-chain, but that would completely defeat the purpose of a stealth strategy game.
We spent considerable time deciding which information should remain confidential versus which information should remain publicly verifiable.
Another challenge was designing an interface that clearly communicates privacy. We wanted judges to immediately understand what Midnight protects, which ultimately led to creating the Privacy Dashboard.
Finally, balancing modern AAA-style UI with a focused MVP required constant prioritization to ensure we delivered a polished experience within the hackathon timeframe.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designed an original multiplayer game centered around confidential gameplay rather than traditional blockchain mechanics.
- Built a polished cyberpunk-inspired interface with cinematic mission planning and replay experiences.
- Created an intuitive Privacy Dashboard that visually demonstrates Midnight's confidential state model.
- Developed a modular architecture that cleanly separates game logic from blockchain integration.
What we learned
This project changed the way we think about blockchain gaming.
Rather than asking:
"How do we put a game on-chain?"
we started asking:
"What kinds of games become possible because confidential computation exists?"
That shift led us toward designing gameplay around hidden strategies, simultaneous execution, and cryptographic fairness instead of simply tokenizing game assets.
We also gained valuable experience designing scalable frontend architectures and creating developer-friendly abstractions for blockchain integrations.
What's next for Phantom Heist
Our roadmap includes:
- Full Midnight smart contract deployment
- Real wallet integration
- Multiplayer matchmaking
- Ranked competitive mode
- AI-powered security guards
- NFT agents and cosmetic collectibles
- Procedurally generated museums
- Seasonal tournaments
- Replay sharing
- Spectator mode with delayed reveal
- Mobile support
Long term, we envision Phantom Heist becoming a showcase for how confidential smart contracts can power the next generation of competitive multiplayer experiences.
Why Midnight?
Traditional blockchains make nearly every game state public.
For strategy games, this creates serious problems:
- Opponents can inspect hidden information.
- Stream sniping becomes easier.
- Competitive strategies leak.
- Fairness suffers.
Midnight enables something fundamentally different.
Players can commit confidential strategies that remain hidden throughout gameplay while still allowing the network to verify that every action follows the rules.
Instead of exposing strategy and proving ownership afterward, Phantom Heist keeps strategy confidential and proves fairness simultaneously.
We believe this unlocks an entirely new class of multiplayer games that were previously impossible on public blockchains.
