Inspiration
Inspired by Vietnam's beloved phở and the frustration of imperfect broth ratios, we created Phở Fever—a Unity mobile game that turns cooking into an addictive puzzle. The joy of nailing that first perfect bowl, combined with our love for casual games like Diner Dash, sparked this flavorful adventure.
What it does
Phở Fever is a time-management cooking sim where players run a bustling phở stall. Chop herbs, simmer bones, and serve steaming bowls to hungry customers. A core mechanic uses math puzzles: solve equations like ( T = \frac{B \times H}{S} ) (where ( T ) is total time, ( B ) bone weight, ( H ) heat level, ( S ) simmer factor) to balance broth perfectly and avoid disasters like over-salted soup.
How we built it
We prototyped in Unity 2D with C# scripts for gameplay loops. Tilemaps handled the kitchen layout, Particle System for steaming effects, and UI Toolkit for dynamic recipe displays. Integrated LaTeX-like rendering via TextMeshPro for in-game equations. Tested on Android for touch controls, iterating based on playtests.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing puzzle difficulty with fun pacing was tricky—early broth sims felt too grindy. Unity's 2D physics caused erratic chopping animations, fixed by custom colliders. Ensuring cultural accuracy meant consulting Vietnamese cooks, while optimizing for mobile drained battery during long sessions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Launching a polished demo with 50+ levels, vibrant pixel art of Hanoi streets, and a global leaderboard. Our math-integrated cooking earned praise at local game jams, proving education can taste great. Hitting 1,000 downloads in beta feels like serving a sold-out night!
What we learned
Unity's ecosystem shines for rapid iteration, but scope creep is real—focus on core loops first. Blending culture with gameplay requires sensitivity; user testing revealed universal appeal in shared meals. C# coroutines revolutionized our timing mechanics.
What's next for Phở Fever
Expand to multiplayer co-op for virtual phở parties, add AR mode for real-kitchen overlays, and port to consoles. We're eyeing VR noodle-twirling and partnerships with food festivals. The fever's just heating up—aiming for a full release by 2026!
