Inspiration
A terraria/cuphead like video game where you run away trying to eliminate a monster chasing after you.
What it does
You basically control a character that fires projectiles towards a boss and you have to try and survive. Here is the link explaining the code: https://youtu.be/8chyx7--GKE
How we built it
We used Unity game engine and C# in order to code the scripts. We were also using Github to facilitate collaborations.
Challenges we ran into
- Did not have ANY prior experience with Unity and C# so we had to learn from the ground up during this 24 hour event
- Trying to figure out how GitHub repositories function, as well as setting up a repository.
- Figuring out how to slice sprite sheets to be able to animate sprites.
- Coming up with the script required for a working level selection screen.
- Figuring out how to use collision properly to detect when a sprite has been hit by a projectile.
- Coming up with the script to have the boss enemy follow the player, alongside dashing to the player
- Initially trying to figure out how to make the player sprite move with the corresponding key inputs.
- Using finite state machines for boss phases (Ex the boss would attack in a different pattern at 25% health)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learned a lot about Unity and C#
- We made the basis for a game as complete beginners in 24 hours
- We made at least one complete level
- Most of the logical issues we ran into, we were able to solve eventually.
- The firing mechanic that the player has. (Ex. the projectiles fire in the direction of the user's mouse cursor)
- Getting the boss to properly dash and follow the player.
- Getting the camera to follow the player with a small delay.
What we learned
- We learned a brand new game engine (Unity) and a new programming language (C#)
- learned more about data structures and how we can connect/import GameObjects with/to eachother.
- Got a better understand of how game development works (Ex. how a script ties in with a GameObject)
- learned how to delay certain actions in void Update(), which provided to be very useful throughout the project
- learned how to animate using sprite sheets.
- Learned how to used GitHub for code collaboration
What's next for pew pew pow
- Fixing up some quality of life changes such as better animations
- adding new levels
- new boss mechanics
- better movement for the character
- showing off to friends and family
- better sprites that match the oceanic theme
- Learning how to design our own sprites.
- Sound effects that better match the user's actions
