PetSOS: When Your Pet Can't Tell You What's Wrong
The "Oh Sh*t" Moment That Started Everything
Three months ago, my neighbor's dog got into some chocolate while they were at work. By the time they got home, the poor pup was showing symptoms, but they had no clue how much chocolate was dangerous, whether to induce vomiting, or if they needed to rush to the emergency vet immediately.
They ended up frantically googling while their dog was suffering, bouncing between sketchy websites and calling three different vet offices. That's when it hit me - pet emergencies don't wait for convenient business hours, and panic brain doesn't do research well.
Every pet owner has been there. Your cat stops eating. Your dog starts limping. It's 11 PM on a Sunday. Is this "wait until morning" or "drop everything and find an emergency vet" territory?
What I Built
PetSOS is the app I wish existed during every pet emergency I've witnessed. It's designed for people who are stressed, possibly crying, and need answers now.
Core Features:
- Toxicity Scanner: Snap a photo of what your pet ate, get instant "SAFE/TOXIC/EMERGENCY" results
- Symptom Checker: Select symptoms, get clear triage guidance
- Emergency Dashboard: One-tap access to vets, poison control, emergency contacts
- Medical Profile: Critical pet info accessible even when you're panicking
- Smart Triage: Guides you to "rush to vet" vs "monitor at home" vs "call tomorrow"
The Technical Journey
Built entirely with Bolt.new in one weekend (shoutout to those free tokens! 🙌)
Started with a massive single prompt covering the entire app structure, then iteratively refined:
Key Technical Decisions:
- Mobile-first design - because emergencies happen everywhere
- Offline-capable - critical info stored locally for dead zones
- One-handed operation - large buttons, simple navigation
- Camera integration - for the toxicity scanner
- Geolocation services - find nearest emergency vet
- Medical red/yellow/green color coding - instant visual triage
The Build Process:
- Foundation first - Got core structure and navigation working
- Feature by feature - Built each major component separately
- Integration hell - Made everything work together smoothly
- Polish phase - UI refinements, error handling, edge cases
Challenges That Nearly Broke Me
The Toxicity Database was harder than expected. Turns out there's a lot of nuance in pet toxicity - dosage matters, pet size matters, timing matters. Had to balance comprehensive info with "don't overwhelm the panicked human" simplicity.
Symptom Logic got complex fast. Vomiting + lethargy could be everything from "ate too fast" to "intestinal blockage." Had to build decision trees that were medically sound but not so conservative that everything became "GO TO VET NOW."
Mobile Responsiveness with camera functionality. Getting the photo upload to work smoothly across different devices while maintaining the urgent, clinical feel took several iterations.
The Emotional Design Challenge: How do you make an app that feels authoritative and calming during crisis moments? Every color choice, button size, and word matters when someone's pet might be dying.
What I Learned
User experience design for crisis situations is a whole different beast. Normal UX rules don't apply when your user is crying and their dog just ate a sock.
Medical apps require incredible precision. Every piece of advice could impact a living creature's health. That responsibility shaped every design decision.
Bolt.new is legitimately powerful for rapid prototyping complex applications. The fact that I built something this comprehensive in a weekend still blows my mind.
Why This Matters
Every year, thousands of pets die from preventable emergencies simply because their owners didn't know what to do fast enough. PetSOS isn't just an app - it's potentially a life-saving tool that puts emergency veterinary knowledge in every pet owner's pocket.
The real test isn't whether it wins a contest. It's whether it helps someone's dog survive eating chocolate at 2 AM when the regular vet is closed.
Built with ❤️ for all the pets who can't tell us when something's wrong, and all the humans who love them enough to panic.
