Study apps for microbiology are everywhere and almost none of them say what they're based on. Students memorise whatever the app tells them, and some of it is wrong. I wanted one that was written carefully and is open about its references.
PetriKey has 341 organism and concept cards. I wrote the content from standard references: the CDC, NCBI Bookshelf, OpenStax, WHO, and ICTV for virus names. The app lists those reference groups under Progress, in Content sources. I went through the content in fact-checking passes and fixed a number of outdated virus classifications along the way.
Around that there's what you need to actually study. Flashcards with spaced repetition, so cards you struggle with come back sooner. Multiple choice quizzes. A lab section with CFU and serial dilution calculators. And step by step identification flows, for example gram-positive cocci, then clusters, then coagulase, which lands you on Staph aureus.
Everything works offline and there's no account. A lot of nursing students revise on placement with no signal, so that mattered to me.
The app is free to start, with a starter set of cards, one identification flow and the lab calculators. Premium unlocks the full library through RevenueCat, with weekly, yearly and lifetime options.
