Inspiration

"Who's the Anteater with 3 wives? Peter the Cheater!" "Why are fish easy to weigh? Because they have their own scales." Whether you enjoy dad jokes or UCI-related jokes, with HackUCI in the middle of midterms season, we thought it'd be nice to have a fun chrome extension that people could use to cheer themselves up. As a result, we built Petr's Hangout!

What it does

When you click on the Petr icon in your Chrome taskbar, you are greeted with a Petr cartoon welcoming you to Petr's Hangout! From there, you have the option to view a UCI joke, a dad joke, or a completely random Kanye quote. There are also three color options for users to further customize their experience: pastel yellow, blue, and green!

How we built it

We built the options scripts using basic DOM manipulation and the chrome.storage API to save options such as the background color. The content scripts used the fetch api paired with the icanhazdadjoke and kanye.rest api's, with the UCI jokes being in a simple list. Our jokes along with the main image in the popup are all generated using Math.random. The UI was designed in Figma and then built with HTML/CSS and Bootstrap, and we got our cartoons from Reddit, as well as from our graphic designer, Alyssa.

What's next for Petr's Hangout

We are currently waiting for Petr's Hangout to be accepted by the Chrome Web Store. After that, we hope people will download it and use it whenever they want a quick laugh!
