Inspiration
The inspiration for Peter Pop came from the “UCI for Sale” platform. The UCI for sale platform on Facebook is widely used by students to trade/sell/buy items ranging from textbooks to appliances. However, the Facebook page has created space for a lot of unsafe transactions and scams, with members from outside the UCI community being able to join and post their items as well. The page also leads to certain posts getting lost, or people not being able to find specific items they are looking for. To prevent this, we had the idea to create Peter Pop, which allows UCI students to register with their UCI email, and sell items safely on one streamlined website. Users are able to sort by prices or by items and cater their shopping experience to the student buyer or seller.
What it does
PeterPop allows you to create an account where you can customize your profile and add items to sell. The website also includes a home page where the user can browse through posts tailored to their interests, as well as specific shopping tabs for appliances, furniture, apparel, and textbooks.
How we built it
We used Atom for HTML, CSS, and Javascript. We used a Google Font API for our design, and used Figma to prototype and create a layout for our website. Due to a time crunch, the rest of our website was created by using Wix, and by incorporating the code we developed on Atom. The final product was created by connecting the front and back end together at the end of the project.
Challenges we ran into
With such a short timeline, we face many challenges along the way. Initially, we were very ambitious and created a complex idea that would require a lot of complex coding and designing. Our main challenge was translating our complicated idea into a user-friendly platform, and have the code work with our vision. Being introduced to different software during our project, we sometimes did not know how to execute our vision in the most optimal way at all times, but we are proud we took on this challenge and hope to continue to build on it in the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project has helped us develop both personally and professionally in many different ways. Coming into Hack UCI as first-timers, we were unsure of what to expect and how we would make our project come into vision. We spent two days learning how to use different software and designing tools such as Figma, CSS, and HTML. We are proud to have collaborated on this project as a group, bringing all of our ideas together and brainstorming together. We hope this project will be useful to students in the future and can provide them with a safe shopping experience within the UCI community, as we continue to develop this website.
What's next for PeterPop
- Allowing the user to customize their profile and posts
- Including a messenger platform
- Feature to save and view certain items
- Filter to help sort content by date and price
We hope our platform will help UCI students have a safe platform for buying and selling products in the future. We also hope to keep advancing Peter Pop for the future, and create accessibility features to be inclusive to more of the UCI community, and establish community guidelines to ensure that students feel secure using our website.
