Inspiration

Meet Maya, who’s getting through a breakup; Arjun, who just bought his first car; and Sophie, who’s grieving her dog, Milo. Ordinary adults, like you and me, navigating growth and change with stories to tell.

Some moments are easy to share. Others take time to put into words. And sometimes, we’re so caught up in getting through the day that we never stop to record how we feel.

We imagined Petal Pals as a gentle place to pause, reflect, and find connection. A garden felt like a natural way to represent that journey: growth takes time, change is part of every season, and each story deserves room to bloom.

What it does

Petal Pals turns your personal journal into a growing garden. Each time you record a story and the emotions behind it, a flower is added. Over time, your garden becomes a collection of the people, experiences, and everyday moments that have shaped your life.

Revisiting these stories creates space to recognize personal growth and understand how your feelings change. Your own reflections can become a source of guidance as you navigate what comes next.

You can keep your garden private or share the stories you choose with others. Through sharing, Petal Pals makes room for community, helping people feel understood and discover that someone else has experienced a similar season of life.

How we built it

We centered the experience around a simple journey: capture a moment, reflect on how it felt, and add it to your garden.

The journal gives each story space to unfold, while the garden brings those stories together visually. We used flowers to represent growth over time, making room for memories of both celebration and change.

Our design priorities were personal reflection, choice, and community. We wanted the experience to offer gentle guidance toward expressing emotions while allowing people to decide what to write and what to share.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was creating a garden that could hold many different emotions. A flower might represent a celebration, a loss, or an uncertain new beginning. We wanted to acknowledge that growth can come through difficult experiences without suggesting that every hardship needs a positive ending.

Another challenge was balancing community with privacy. Sharing can create connection, but people need control over which parts of their lives they reveal.

We also thought carefully about guidance: how to help someone begin reflecting without telling them how they should feel or making journaling feel like another obligation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a concept that connects personal growth with something people can see and revisit. Each flower gives a story a lasting place, and the garden shows how individual moments become part of a changing life.

We’re also proud of making space for both individual reflection and community. Petal Pals lets people tell their stories at their own pace, with opportunities to connect when they feel ready.

What we learned

We learned that growth looks different for everyone. Sometimes it means celebrating a milestone; sometimes it means putting a difficult feeling into words for the first time.

We also learned that guidance works best when it leaves room for choice. A thoughtful invitation to reflect can help people begin, while respecting that they are the authors of their own stories.

Above all, we learned how closely change and community are connected. Hearing someone else’s experience can help us understand our own and feel less alone as we move through unfamiliar moments.

What's next for Petal Pals

Next, we want to test Petal Pals with people who have different journaling habits and learn what helps them reflect, recognize growth, and feel comfortable sharing.

We’d like to explore optional prompts that offer gentle guidance, more ways to personalize flowers, and ways to revisit memories and notice change over time.

We also want to develop thoughtful community features and refine sharing controls so connection remains a choice. Our goal is to help Petal Pals grow into a welcoming place where people can document their lives, support one another, and find meaning through every season.
