Inspiration
“Has anyone given Mochi her medicine today?”
In a household where several people care for a pet, answering that question often means searching group chats, calling someone, or relying on memory.
A study published in 2024 surveyed 151 dog owners at a veterinary teaching hospital in New Zealand: 38% shared medication administration with others, while approximately 30% of the 132 owners managing oral medication reported missed doses (Odom et al., 2024).
We built Pet Together to give caregivers a shared view of what needs doing, who is responsible, and what has been recorded—connecting everyday care with a clearer history for vet visits.
What it does
Pet Together helps households coordinate daily care, track medication, and prepare for vet visits.
- Shared care: Create recurring or one-time tasks, claim them, or offer them to another caregiver. Calendars, reminders, and per-pet views keep responsibilities and progress visible.
- Medication tracking: Set up medication courses and dose times, record administrations or skips, and review adherence. The history distinguishes given, skipped, and not recorded.
- Health records and vet preparation: Keep symptoms, weight, vaccinations, past visits, and supporting photos together. Generate a Vet Visit Pack for a selected period and export it as a shareable PDF.
- AI-assisted entry: Type or say an instruction such as “Feed Mochi every day at 8 a.m.” Gemini proposes a schedule that the caregiver reviews and confirms.
- Household access: Members join through invitations with owner approval. The app supports English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.
How we built it
We built the app with Flutter and Dart. Firebase Authentication handles sign-in, Cloud Firestore synchronizes household data, and Firebase Storage stores photos and attachments. Cloud Functions and Firebase Cloud Messaging support reminders and household updates.
Firebase AI Logic connects to Gemini to turn typed or transcribed instructions into structured task proposals. Charts visualize care activity, and PDFs are generated on the device.
RevenueCat handles purchases, restoration, and subscription entitlements, with eligible access shared across household members. A common service interface supports both the Firebase implementation and a local demo.
Challenges we ran into
- Shared responsibility: We needed clear rules for claiming tasks, requesting handoffs, and handling simultaneous updates. Explicit states and transactional updates help keep responsibility consistent.
- Recurring care: Recurring routines must remain separate from individual occurrences, so skipping today’s walk preserves tomorrow’s schedule.
- Reliable health records: A medication update awaiting server confirmation must not count as a confirmed administration. The vet summary also needs to identify missing information clearly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Connecting daily coordination, medication tracking, and vet preparation.
- Making caregiver responsibilities and handoffs visible.
- Preserving the distinction between given, skipped, and unrecorded doses.
- Turning household records into a shareable Vet Visit Pack.
- Adding Voice to Action to simplify task entry.
- Providing a local demo alongside the cloud implementation.
What we learned
- Clarity is a safety feature: In shared care, ambiguous statuses lead to missed or duplicated doses. Clearly distinguishing between given, skipped, and unrecorded directly impacts how a caregiver decides what to do next.
- Keep AI bounded and transparent: Natural language processing works best when focused on drafting structured schedules, leaving final review and confirmation firmly in the hands of the caregiver.
What's next for Pet Together
On the product side, we plan to strengthen health-related features, including automated alerts for unusual changes in recorded weight and other health data.
To guide broader improvements, we have created a multilingual survey exploring care habits, coordination difficulties, feature priorities, and pricing preferences. We will use the responses to refine our workflows and offerings, inviting respondents to a beta to test updates with real households.
