Inspiration
As a devoted pet parent living in the US, I was constantly frustrated by the overwhelming number of pet products on Amazon and the time-consuming hunt for genuine deals. I noticed my friends and fellow pet owners shared the same pain - we wanted quality pet supplies without breaking the bank, but finding real discounts felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. The inspiration struck when I realized there wasn't a dedicated platform that curates only the best pet product deals specifically from North American Amazon, filtered for quality and genuine savings.
What it does
Pet-supplies-deal.com is a curated deal discovery platform that handpicks the best discounted pet products from Amazon's North American marketplace. We don't just list any sale items - our algorithm and manual curation team identify high-quality pet supplies with significant discounts (minimum 20% off), verified positive reviews, and reliable seller ratings. From premium dog food and cat litter to aquarium supplies and bird toys, we save pet owners 2-3 hours weekly by presenting only worthwhile deals in a clean, searchable interface with price history and discount alerts.
How I built it
I started with a Python-based web scraper using BeautifulSoup and Selenium to monitor Amazon's pet category APIs, focusing on US and Canadian marketplaces. The backend runs on AWS Lambda for cost-effective scraping every 6 hours, storing data in DynamoDB. I built a filtering algorithm that considers discount percentage, review sentiment analysis (using NLTK), seller reputation, and historical pricing data. The frontend uses React with Next.js for SEO optimization, deployed on Vercel. I integrated Amazon's Product Advertising API for real-time price updates and affiliate links. The entire stack is serverless, keeping operational costs under $50/month while handling 10K+ daily product checks.
Challenges I ran into
Amazon's anti-scraping measures were the biggest hurdle - I went through 3 different proxy rotation services before finding a reliable solution. Parsing Amazon's inconsistent product categorization required building a custom ML classifier to accurately identify genuine pet supplies versus random products with "pet" keywords. The affiliate approval process took 3 attempts and required demonstrating genuine traffic value. Managing the balance between automation and manual curation was tricky - too much automation led to low-quality deals slipping through, while manual review didn't scale. I also struggled with the SEO competition from established deal sites, requiring creative long-tail keyword strategies.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Within 6 months, the site attracted 25K monthly visitors without paid advertising, with users spending an average of 4 minutes browsing deals. We've helped pet owners save over $150K collectively through our curated deals. Our email newsletter has a 35% open rate (industry average is 18%) because subscribers trust our curation. I'm particularly proud of building a community where users submit deals they find, creating a crowdsourced validation system. The site now covers 15 pet categories with 98% deal accuracy (measured by user-reported satisfaction). Most rewarding are the emails from users thanking us for helping them afford premium pet food during tough financial times.
What I learned
I discovered that pet owners are incredibly passionate and loyal - they're more likely to share and engage with content that genuinely helps their furry family members. Technical skills aside, I learned that trust is the most valuable currency in the deal space. Users don't just want cheap prices; they want assurance that they're buying quality products for their pets. I underestimated the power of community validation - user-submitted deals and reviews became our strongest growth driver. SEO for niche markets requires different strategies than broad markets - long-tail keywords like "organic grain-free dog food under $50" convert 3x better than generic terms. Most importantly, I learned that solving a personal problem often resonates with thousands of others facing the same issue.
What's next for pet-supplies-deal
I'm expanding into price prediction using historical data to alert users when to buy (similar to airfare predictors). We're developing a mobile app with push notifications for deal alerts on users' preferred pet categories. Partnership discussions are underway with 3 major pet supply retailers beyond Amazon to provide more variety. I'm building a Chrome extension that shows our deal ratings while users browse Amazon directly. The roadmap includes personalized deal recommendations based on pet profiles (breed, age, dietary needs) and integration with Chewy, Petco, and PetSmart. Long-term vision includes expanding to UK and European markets, plus developing our own line of affordable pet products based on user demand patterns we've identified through deal popularity data.
