Inspiration
Redditors love memes, pets, and quirky experiments. We wanted to combine these into a fun daily experience that feels very "Reddit-y." Inspired by Tamagotchi and community-driven games, we created a virtual pet simulator for Reddit.
What it does
- Users can adopt a pet (doge, frog, cat, alien, etc.).
- Players interact via comments (
!feed,!play,!train). - Pets evolve and unlock traits based on user activity.
- Subreddit becomes a pet-sharing hub with leaderboards and events.
How we built it
- Devvit Web + React for frontend UI (pet cards, progress bars).
- Reddit Developer Platform for commands and interactions.
- Node.js backend with cloud storage to save pet states.
- Leaderboards built with Reddit posts/interactive UI.
- Optional GenAI for generating unique pet evolutions.
Challenges we ran into
- Handling real-time updates for pet stats inside Reddit posts.
- Designing fair XP/evolution mechanics that keep players engaged.
- Balancing performance with Redditβs platform limits.
Accomplishments we're proud of
- Built a fully interactive Reddit-first game.
- Blended daily gameplay with community-driven features.
- Created something fun, addictive, and polished enough for Beta.
What we learned
- How to leverage Devvit Web to build interactive Reddit apps.
- Designing game loops that encourage daily engagement.
- Importance of polish, UX, and making features easy to use.
What's next
- Add trading and mini-games between pets.
- Special holiday evolutions (e.g., Halloween Cat, Cosmic Doge).
- Expand to premium layers with Reddit Payments APIs.
