Pet Adoption Portal

Inspiration

Millions of stray and abandoned animals struggle to find safe and loving homes, while many people interested in adoption lack access to a trusted and transparent platform. Traditional adoption processes are often slow, fragmented, and involve limited communication between adopters, shelters, and veterinarians. This inspired us to build Pet Haven Connect, a centralized digital platform that simplifies pet adoption while ensuring trust, transparency, and collaboration among all stakeholders.

What it does

Pet Haven Connect is a full-stack pet adoption platform that connects adopters, animal shelters, veterinarians, and administrators in one secure ecosystem.

The platform allows adopters to browse available pets, submit adoption requests, track application status, donate to shelters, and manage their profiles. Shelters can register pets, review adoption applications, manage donations, and monitor pet availability. Veterinarians maintain pet medical records, verify pet health, and manage appointments. Administrators oversee the entire platform by verifying shelters and veterinarians, managing users, handling complaints, generating reports, monitoring analytics, configuring SMTP settings, and enforcing platform policies.

The application also provides secure authentication, email verification, password reset, role-based dashboards, notifications, and comprehensive reporting to improve the overall adoption experience.

How we built it

We developed the project using a Microservices Architecture to ensure scalability and maintainability.

The frontend was built with React.js, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Axios, and React Router, providing a modern and responsive user experience.

The backend was developed using Spring Boot, consisting of an Authentication Service and a Main Service that communicate through REST APIs.

Security is implemented using JWT-based authentication and role-based authorization. SMTP integration enables email verification and secure password reset functionality, while WebSockets provide real-time notifications.

The project uses a hybrid database architecture with H2 SQL for authentication and transactional data and MongoDB for dynamic business data such as pets, adoption requests, donations, appointments, complaints, notifications, and medical records.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was implementing secure authentication across multiple user roles while maintaining a smooth user experience.

We also encountered challenges integrating frontend and backend services, implementing JWT authentication, configuring SMTP email delivery, managing secure password reset workflows, handling email verification, designing role-based dashboards, and synchronizing multiple microservices. Debugging API communication, handling database interactions, and ensuring responsive UI across devices were additional challenges throughout development.

What we learned

This project provided valuable experience in full-stack software development and enterprise application design.

We learned how to build scalable microservices using Spring Boot, implement secure authentication with JWT, integrate SMTP email services, manage REST APIs, use hybrid databases effectively, and develop responsive user interfaces with React and Tailwind CSS.

We also improved our skills in API integration, debugging, version control with Git, database design, role-based access control, and collaborative software development.
