Inspiration

As the majority of us are going to be incoming freshmen to university in the fall, we were inspired by our own stresses going into University, especially those relating to joining a new community where we need to search for a lot of resources independently. Clubs, especially are something a lot of new university students are not very familiar with, especially at universities far away. The transition to university is difficult, so why can’t we make one aspect of it less scary?

What it does

Although useful for all new-coming university students, this website was specifically made for introverts and busy individuals who can’t make the club fair in mind. We tackle club recommendations with personality compatibility as the central focus as opposed to just topic interest in the hopes that it will inspire new students to try new things and discover new passions. We are providing a personalized quiz which matches you to your most compatible clubs.

How we built it

Using CSS, HTML & Javascript, we built our website. Our main component of this website revolves around the personality quiz. So by learning and utilizing our web development skills, we built our unique personality quiz with CSS HTML & Javascript. Then we created a home page which introduced our goals and background information and in the middle of the front page was a button that leads to the actual quiz. The page of the quiz uses the most CSS to allow for an appealing aspect to the user and the “user-friendly” feel to it.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled with narrowing down our ideas, as well as, sorting the clubs into groups. Moreover, since we are beginner hackers, we struggled with getting familiar with new applications like VS code. Although our overall topic was too broad, as we narrowed down our focus, we were able to establish our goals and the skills needed to accomplish them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We learned Javascript and WebDev throughout our process. We problem-solved bugs and processed through HTML forms. Since all group members were beginner hackers, we also learned how to apply coding languages in a project-based setting and troubleshoot any issues we faced.

What we learned

Throughout these 36 hours, our team was able to get exposed to web development. As all of our group are beginner coders, we stepped into this hackathon with little to no knowledge about how to independently code and structure a website without help. We learned how to upload images and create an interactive website.

What's next for University ClubConnect

Our next goals include expanding to more universities and finding more efficient methods to store large amounts of school club data to ensure that all possible options to students are available for their viewing.
