Inspiration
we here inspired by the need for a simple accessible tool to manage personal finance especially for students and young professionals tracking expenses amid rising costs similar apps like those using MERN stack dashboards motivate us to create intuitive tracker with real time insights our goal was simplifying budgeting through a team built-full gull-stack solution.
What it does
the app allows user to log income and expenses categorize transactions view dashboards with total of savings ,spendings trends , and charts . key features include user authentication ,CRUD operations for transactions ,filtering by date/category and visual analytics like pie chats for expenses breakdown.it helps users gain quick overview and set budgets effectively
How we built it
Our four-member team divided tasks: two handle frontend (React/HTML/CSS/JS for responsive UI, forms, and charts) to manage backend (Node.js/Express for APIs, MongoDB for data storage). We used Git for collaboration, libraries like chart.js for visuals ensuring seamless full stack integration.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating frontend-backend APIs caused CORS errors and data sync issues, especially during real time update team coordination led to merge conflicts on git, and deployment hurdles environment variables and data base connection in production arose.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
successfully deployed a secure responsive app accessible on mobile/desktop, with smooth authentication via JWT and real-time transaction tracking. our team delivered all core features on time, including interactive visualization that provide actionable insight, demonstrating effective full-stack collaboration. Achieving zero major bugs post-testing was a key win.
What we learned
We gained expertise in full-stack workflows, from API design to deployment, emphasizing server-side validation and error handling for production readiness. Teamwork taught us Git best practices and agile communication, while challenges highlighted the importance of early security planning. This project boosted our skills in MERN stack for scalable apps.
What's next for Personal Finance Tracker
Future enhancements include AI-powered expense categorization, mobile app version with React Native, budget alerts via notification, and integration with bank API for auto-transaction. We'd also multi-currency support and sharing for group expenses to evolve it into a comprehensive tool.
