InspirationCustom AI Chatbot with Memory

Inspiration

I wanted to build an AI chatbot that could do more than simply respond to individual questions. Many times, when chatting with an AI, the conversation needs context from previous messages to make the responses more useful. This inspired me to create a custom chatbot that maintains conversation history and provides context-aware responses.

What it does

Custom AI Chatbot with Memory is a Python-based chatbot powered by the OpenAI API. It allows users to interact with an AI assistant through a conversational interface while keeping track of previous messages.

The project includes a command-line interface and a Streamlit-based web interface, making it easy to experiment with AI conversations.

Key features include:

  • Context-aware conversations: Keeps recent messages in the conversation history so the AI can use previous context when responding.
  • Conversation history management: Includes functionality to save, load, and clear chat history in the command-line version.
  • Memory control: Limits the conversation history to the latest 20 messages to help manage the context sent to the model.
  • Interactive chat interface: Uses Streamlit to provide a simple interface for asking questions and viewing AI responses.
  • AI-powered responses: Uses the OpenAI API with the GPT-4.1 mini model.

How I built it

I built the project using Python and divided its functionality into separate modules to keep the code organized.

  • Python: Handles the chatbot logic and conversation flow.
  • OpenAI API: Generates responses based on the conversation history.
  • Streamlit: Provides a browser-based chat interface.
  • JSON: Stores conversation history in the command-line version.
  • python-dotenv: Loads API credentials from environment variables.

The main chatbot module manages messages, trims the conversation history, sends requests to the AI model, and returns the generated responses. A separate memory manager handles saving, loading, and clearing chat history.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main challenges was managing conversation history properly. Sending every previous message indefinitely would make the context grow unnecessarily, so I implemented a mechanism to retain only the most recent 20 messages.

I also organized the project into separate modules for chatbot logic, configuration, and memory management. This helped me understand how different parts of a Python application work together.

What I learned

Through this project, I gained practical experience with:

  • Integrating an AI model through an API.
  • Managing conversational context and message history.
  • Working with Python modules and environment variables.
  • Building a simple interactive application with Streamlit.
  • Organizing code into reusable components.

What's next for the project?

I would like to improve the chatbot by adding more advanced memory management, persistent conversation storage in the web interface, chat export functionality, and a more polished user interface. I also plan to explore ways to personalize responses based on user preferences.

Final thoughts

This project was a valuable step in my journey of learning Python and AI application development. Building it helped me move beyond writing individual scripts and understand how to combine APIs, application logic, and a user interface into a working project.

I'm looking forward to improving it further and exploring more practical applications of AI.
