Inspiration

My inspiration for LegalMind came from witnessing the challenges faced by millions of Indians in accessing justice. With over 50 million cases pending in Indian courts and many people struggling to understand their legal rights, I saw a pressing need for a solution that makes legal knowledge accessible to everyone. Conversations with friends and family—some of whom have faced legal hurdles without clear guidance—highlighted how complex language, slow processes, and limited resources leave ordinary people feeling lost and powerless. This motivated me to build an AI-powered platform that breaks down legal information and empowers individuals to make informed decisions with confidence.

What It Does

LegalMind is a web application that provides instant, trustworthy legal answers tailored to Indian law. Anyone can ask a legal question and receive a clear, citation-backed response in seconds. The app also offers features like downloadable PDF summaries and related questions to help users explore their rights further. My mission is to democratise legal knowledge—making it simple, accessible, and actionable for all.

How I built it

I built LegalMind as a solo developer using Next.js for both the frontend and backend, with a modern UI powered by Shadcn. Authentication is handled by Clerk, and the core AI functionality is driven by the Perplexity Sonar API, ensuring fast and reliable legal insights.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main challenges was integrating the Sonar API and ensuring the app could deliver accurate, context-aware answers. I overcame these hurdles by diving deep into the documentation, experimenting, and refining the user experience to make it as seamless as possible.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I’m proud to have created a fully functional, end-to-end AI web application that empowers ordinary Indians to understand and exercise their legal rights. Building this as a solo developer, I focused on accessibility, trust, and real-world impact.

What I learned

This project taught me how to build technology that truly serves its users. I learned the importance of clear communication, user-centric design, and the power of AI to bridge gaps in access to justice.

What's next for Perplexity for Legal Professionals

Looking ahead, I plan to introduce advanced legal document analysis—enabling users to upload PDF or DOCX files and receive contextual, AI-powered insights. My goal is to continue expanding LegalMind’s capabilities, making legal empowerment a reality for everyone in India.
