Inspiration
Our inspiration behind this app was to give students the opportunity to study more efficiently, especially when under a lot of pressure.
What it does
With an input link, this chrome extension provides a concise summary of the contents of the page with relevant Wikipedia links and Ted Talks.
How we built it
We utilized the smmry API, IBM-Watson API, HTML, JavaScript, Node.js, and Angular.js to create our chrome extension. The two APIs helped us with our summarizing text features. JavaScript and HTML helped with both the front and back end, and Angular.js was specifically used for the front end while Node.js was used for the back end.
Challenges we ran into
Originally, the idea of the chrome extension was to give students the ability to expedite the studying process by recording lectures and having the ability to use our extension to summarize it. However, we had difficulty finding the right API to do this in 24 hours, so we decided to stick to text-only for this hackathon. In the near future, we will be adding this feature to the chrome extension.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how efficient the extension is as it is able to summarize any given link in a matter of seconds. We are proud of the design of it given that we only had 24 hours to do it.
What we learned
We learned how to make a Chrome extension. We learned how difficult it is to piece APIs together in a manner that best suits the functionality of our product.
What's next for PeRoos
Next, we will add the feature of being able to record lectures and being able to drag and drop in audio files to be summarized quickly along with key concepts, summaries, wikipedia articles and relevant Ted Talks. We hope to make this a very useful extension for students and for anyone who wants to summarize any link.
