Inspiration
Menstruation is a basic, yet stigmatized bodily function. In part due to its stigmatization, access to proper hygiene products and education for menstruation can be extremely inadequate. This unequal menstrual access/education is called period poverty, and we wanted to build a website that could help combat the issue.
What it does
periodpower. is an informative website about period poverty. Visitors can learn about period poverty and its effects, as well as possible organizations they can donate to support menstrual equity. A unique feature of periodpower. is that visitors can share their own personal experiences, with selected blurbs being published on periodpower. in blog format.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS to code our website that was implemented through VSCode.
Challenges we ran into
Because our team wasn't highly familiar with coding in HTML, trying to code a website through the programming language was a newer experience that we struggled with.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're really proud of our final product! Despite our inexperience with HTML and CSS, we feel that our final website worked out well. We feel that our project is valuable in helping combat an important issue.
What we learned
We learned a lot about cooperation and the hackathon experience in general. This was our first hackathon, so it was really educational to participate in a group coding environment.
What's next for periodpower.
We hope to be able to expand functions of periodpower. in various ways. For example, we have a location-based function in mind that would be able to help low-income users find free/low-cost menstruation products.
