Inspiration

At Liftoff 2026, we wanted to create something fun, educational, and memorable. We imagined a world where aliens were trying to learn English, but instead of using normal teaching methods, they learned through the periodic table. That idea became Periodic — a creative way to combine science, language learning, and humor into one experience.

What it does

Periodic teaches aliens how to speak English using periodic elements. Users interact with element-based language tools and activities that connect chemistry concepts with vocabulary and communication. The project turns learning into a playful sci-fi experience while making the periodic table more engaging and accessible.

How we built it

Our team of four collaborated throughout the hackathon to design, build, and refine the project in a short amount of time. We worked on the frontend experience, backend systems, database setup, and content integration together to bring the concept to life overnight.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was populating the database with meaningful and organized information. Since the app depended heavily on accurate element data and language mappings, structuring everything efficiently took more time than expected. We also had to balance creativity with usability while working under tight hackathon deadlines.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we successfully built a complete and functional project during an overnight hackathon. Turning a funny and unusual idea into a working application in such a short time was incredibly rewarding. We also worked well as a team, dividing tasks effectively and pushing through technical obstacles together.

What we learned

Throughout the project, we learned how important teamwork, planning, and adaptability are in fast-paced development environments. We also gained experience working with databases, integrating educational content into an application, and rapidly prototyping ideas under time pressure.

What's next for Periodic

Next, we want to expand Periodic with more interactive lessons, better language-learning features, and a larger chemistry knowledge base. We’d also like to improve the UI/UX, add gamification elements, and potentially support multiple languages so more users, and more “aliens” can learn through the platform.
