Inspiration
I was inspired by some friends talking about their experience in AP Chem being good with the new teacher, and I decided to make a game to hopefully distract them during class so theycan sympathize with my pain from that class.
What it does
It is a Tetris game with the added features of some elements from the periodic table that interact uniquely to typical blocks.
How we built it
I used Unity, C#, and enough YouTube tutorials to let some small creators live off ad revenue alone for the next month.
Challenges we ran into
I didn't know how to play Tetris, use Unity, or do much chemistry. So naturally, the biggest challenge was wondering why I picked this project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I made the base game of Tetris and managed to implement specially-shaped Tetrominos (blocks)
What we learned
Java really translates over to C# and I need a better organizational system for my programs.
What's next for Periodic Table Tetris
I will absolutely continue development; I didn't get anywhere near where I wanted to get because of lack of experience in this area, but now that I'm getting the hang of Unity I want to do everything else I wanted to do. I planned to have a total of 6-8 elements in the game that would allow some to react with each other if specific ones came into contact. I know I can implement points, a start and end screen, and a ghost outline for where the block will land; I didn't do these things during the hackathon because of time pressure and need to prioritize getting at least one chemistry-related feature added.
