Inspiration

The inspiration for Period Power came from the stories and experiences of countless young girls in South Africa who face significant barriers to managing their menstrual health. These barriers often result in missing school, which has a long-term impact on their education and future opportunities. Understanding that menstruation is a natural process that should not hinder a girl's education, we were driven to create a solution that leverages technology to empower girls, provide them with necessary resources, and foster a supportive community.

What it does

Period Power is more than just a web app; it is a movement towards empowering girls to take control of their menstrual health and their education. By providing comprehensive support, resources, and a community, we aim to break the cycle of absenteeism and create a brighter future for girls in South Africa. The journey of building Period Power taught us the importance of empathy, user-centered design, and the powerful role technology can play in solving real-world problems.

How we built it

Research and Planning:

We began with extensive research to understand the challenges faced by girls in South Africa regarding menstrual health. We consulted studies, reports, and directly engaged with communities to gather insights. Based on this research, we defined the key features of the app, focusing on education, period tracking, resource accessibility, and community support.

Challenges we ran into

Addressing Stigma:

One of the biggest challenges was addressing the cultural stigma surrounding menstruation. Ensuring the app provided a safe and non-judgmental space for girls to learn and share their experiences was crucial. Privacy Concerns:

Managing sensitive information required robust data security measures. Implementing secure authentication and data encryption was essential to protect users' privacy. Resource Accessibility:

Providing accurate and up-to-date information about local resources for menstrual hygiene products was challenging. Collaborating with local organizations and continuously updating the resource directory helped mitigate this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Research and Understanding:

Conducted extensive research to understand the menstrual health challenges faced by girls in South Africa. Engaged with local communities, schools, and organizations to gather firsthand insights and validate the need for the app.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Period Power, we learned about the profound impact of menstrual health on education and the pervasive stigma that surrounds it. We discovered that the lack of education on menstrual health and inadequate access to hygiene products are major contributors to school absenteeism. We also learned about the importance of user-centered design, especially when dealing with sensitive issues like menstrual health, to ensure that the solution is both effective and respectful of the users' privacy and dignity.

What's next for Period Power

Expand User Base:

Launch targeted marketing and outreach campaigns to increase awareness and adoption of Period Power among girls and schools in South Africa. Collaborate with more schools, especially in rural areas, to ensure wider accessibility.

  1. Feature Enhancements:

Develop and integrate new features based on user feedback, such as more detailed health tips, customizable period tracking, and localized content in various languages. Implement a mobile app version to reach users with limited access to computers.

  1. Resource and Product Distribution:

Partner with more organizations to ensure a consistent and reliable supply of free or affordable menstrual hygiene products. Develop a system to track the distribution of these products and identify areas with the highest need.
