Inspiration

On Friday, one of our team members went to the bathroom and observed the sad display of pads (two small pads) free and available in the bathroom. It should be known that these flimsy pads that are provided are 1, far and few, and 2, only good enough for getting back to your dorm to replace with an actually good pad. Thus, we decided to bring awareness, so that our fellow coders can catch a glimpse into one of the struggles of womanhood.

What it does

This is a game that simulates being a woman on her period. And you are also poor, so you don't have money to buy good pads. You walk forward to find bathrooms to survive.

How we built it

We used HTML and CSS to make a website with information, and then we used Godot to make the game and Medibang Paint Pro to design the woman and the background.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into while creating this project was integrating our work in Godot together with the portion written in HTML. HTML was a language we were all familiar with and didn’t have many concerns with, but we wanted to challenge ourselves with using a new game engine, which ended up being Godot. A lot of time was spent learning the basics of Godot, leaving us with very little room to explore embedding the game into the HTML file. On top of that, the team did not have any more than beginner experience with embeds in HTML. Once we were done with each of the components, the HTML file and the parts in Godot, we gathered together to research how to combine the two.

We also went through several learning curves with our tribulations in Godot. The first PNGs that we created were not compatible with the first format of the game, so we tried shrinking the PNG's and also completely remade the game to run more efficiently. Later, we ran into trouble with the pop-up text box because during our first few attempts, the text was not showing up. We solved this problem by familiarizing ourselves with the programming in Godot, and we got the text to show up!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of making this game within 7 hours because 3 of us had club obligations and responsibilities for the entire day Saturday. We did not start until 10 PM, and we are proud of ourselves for not giving up.

What we learned

We learned many things including: Godot, working on a collaborative project on separate local discs, how to use GitHub, and the great number of things that can be accomplished with the power of friendship.

What's next for Period Poverty

Something we wanted to do, but ran out of time for, was adding NPCs to the game. They would contribute to the general societal norms surrounding periods and period products, with some being fellow women with spare pads/tampons, some being judgemental people who make remarks on things like leaking through, and some being people in a similar predicament as the main character of Period Poverty.
