Inspiration

I reflected on my own experience with learning about menstruation and I realized how afraid I was to ask questions about my own body because of the way we discuss having a period. Instead of being proud that our bodies are made this way, we cover up and whisper about our bodily processes. I wanted to create a website that would help minimize this and educate women about their bodies.

What it does

The app is the intersection between women empowerment and period education. It gives tweens/young teens a chance to explore the way their bodies work without being judged and afraid.

How we built it

I started the design process using Figma to track the different elements I wanted to include in my website. Then I used Qoom to code and followed a tutorial on Qoom to implement a login system.

Challenges we ran into

CSS styling has always been a challenge for me and continued to be a challenge for me in this project. Tasks like centering objects and aligning things into a row stumped me frequently. On top of this, the navbar was supposed to display sign up/log in OR log out depending on whether or not the user signed in yet. This required me to learn something called "mustaching." There were errors that arose with this code because the computer sometimes would not recognize the mustaching which I was unable to fix (even with the help of a mentor). The quiz also gave me a lot of trouble on the Javascript end which is why I wasn't able to personalize the response to the choices that the user input.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I found a workaround to my quiz issue by directing the user straight to the info page. It wasn't the type of quiz I had planned or wanted to create but it was an innovative solution to this issue in the context of the timeframe of this project. I'm proud that this website is something I would use in my day-to-day life. I see a need for the information my website provides and I'm excited to share it with other people.

What we learned

Coding is super fun!!! I loved using the skills I already have and the ones I gained this past weekend to create a project I'm super proud of. I also learned that there are many ways to code the same thing. Through the help of many mentors, I worked through problems I encountered in my code by creating workarounds. This broadened what I thought CS could be.

What's next for Period Education

With more time, I would implement the calendar feature I detailed in my Figma prototype. This would allow for more personalization with an account. I would also create a quiz that is more responsive to the results that the user inputs.
