Peps Towards Sustainability

Inspiration Inspired by PepsiCo’s vast global operations and commitment to sustainability, we sought to create a centralized system to assess their sustainability efforts. We wanted to provide a clear metric that could measure how effectively PepsiCo is reaching its goals.

What it does 'Peps Towards Sustainability' creates a unified metric to measure the company's sustainability performance across agriculture, packaging, water, and transportation. It quantifies the environmental impact and highlights areas for improvement.

How we built it We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build an interactive web app that calculates the deviation from optimal sustainability targets based on PepsiCo’s data inputs. The app tracks performance across several key metrics and generates a report on potential improvements.

Challenges we ran into We encountered difficulties integrating various sustainability metrics into a unified calculation and ensuring accurate data representation for diverse areas like packaging and transportation. Addressing data gaps and ensuring scalability were also major challenges.

Accomplishments that we are proud of We successfully developed a working model to quantify sustainability in a meaningful way, using linear regression to see if PepsiCo is on track to meet their 2030 goals that they set for themselves in their ESG goals by presenting how far away they are from being on track and if they even are on track, overcoming complex logistical and data hurdles. Our solution can evaluate changes and provide actionable insights into how PepsiCo can improve its sustainability efforts.

What we learned We gained a deeper understanding of sustainability metrics, data integration, and the complexities of applying environmental measures across global supply chains. Additionally, we developed technical skills in web development and data analytics.

What's next In the future, we plan to incorporate AI to provide predictive analysis, expand the tool’s applicability to other industries, and deepen its integration with PepsiCo's existing sustainability infrastructure for real-time data input and reporting.
