Inspiration

Our inspiration came, firstly, from Sudawan’s passion for fashion. Then we looked into how many clothes get thrown in the trash or aren’t worn more than a few times. We wanted to find a way to reduce perfectly good material from going to waste.

What it does

People’s Clothes is a service that tailors clothing to personally fit customers by upcycling unwanted and unused clothing, and turning the material in clothing people will wear more than just a couple times. The customers will request an order on our site, where they will have full control over material, colour, and design used. It also allows the customers to be able to order only the material and be given the opportunity to sew it themselves if they wish. Our site will allow organisations and everyday people who wish to work with us the ability to easily do so. All they need to do is make an account and they will be able to follow the easy to find tabs and be able to sell their clothing (in good condition) to us, rather than allowing the material to go to waste. By having an account, organisations can also be linked in with other organisations and allow them to have easier and faster communication. And for every item of clothing that was sold, if the material came from a charity organisation, then that charity will receive at least 25% of the profits.

How we built it

At this point in time, we only have the designs for a website, which provides the idea of how it will run and we imagine an app would be styled and runs similarly to our concept.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into the challenge of not making our idea just be a website. We hadn’t quite thought about how technology could be a way to be a part of our project and make our idea, if turned into something real, into something that would stand out from most tailors or clothing designers. After brainstorming with a mentor, we found the way to bring charity organisations into it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That we were able to conceptualise our idea into something that could work and have a profitable business.

What we learned

We learned that we need to focus more on narrowing our idea into one point early on, and think about every aspect of the project i.e. the target audience and whether that audience is enough to run a business around, and making sure everyone has a clear idea of what the project is about. Also, working with mentors is an excellent way of finding any holes that you don’t realise are in your idea.

What's next for People's Clothes

Expand our business. Turn it into an app.
