Penny

Penny was created to address the issue of lack of financial literacy among Canadians. We wanted to build an app that would make learning about managing finances accessible and approachable. The app generates questions within lesson blocks to teach the user about financial terms, strategies, and so much more.

Stack

  • Next.js
  • React
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Gemini Flash 1.5 API

Utilities

  • Git / Github
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet + Cursor
  • Deployed to Vercel

Challenges

  • Prompt engineering; we struggled to give clear and precise instructions

Time management

  • We didn’t have the time to implement best practices for scalable and maintainable code.
  • We lacked the time to implement all of the features we had envisioned.

What’s next?

Penny can be scaled to serve a wide range of financial education needs by introducing specialized modules for different audiences and topics. For young kids, the app can be further simplified and enhanced with interactive games, colorful visuals, and engaging storytelling to appeal to elementary school-aged children, fostering good financial habits from an early age. It can also incorporate modules on bank scam and fraud prevention, teaching users how to recognize phishing schemes and protect personal information. Additionally, Penny can expand its investment education offerings to cover asset classes like cryptocurrency and real estate.
