Inspiration
The cost of college has skyrocketed throughout the years, and we are inspired to help college students save their money. We recognize the importance of saving, and our application helps college students keep track of their weekly expenses, because these expenses add up.
What it does
It keeps track of your budget for each category, housing, food, entertainment, and miscellaneous, and it keeps track of how much money you can spend to stay under the budget. The user signs in with their email, and we keep track of how much money they have to spare in each category. If the user goes over for the week, we give them feedback.
How we built it
We coded using React.js in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. Also, we used firebase for our sign in.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was coding simultaneously. If one of us came across a bug, we both needed to help fix the bug because we would not be able to see our application until it was fixed. Another challenge was incorporating firebase into our code. We had limited experience working with firebase, and it was difficult to learn in a short period of time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our visual site. We are proud that our application has a responsive design to any computer or phone you pull it up with. Finally, we are proud of completing a virtual hackathon, communicating well, and working well as a team.
What we learned
We learned the importance of planning before coding. We learned how to break up our project into pieces, in order to accomplish one part at a time.
What's next for Penny Pincher
We want to add a graph for our user to see their progress throughout their months and semesters of college. In the future, we will add a feature to compare a student's wage with their amount of loans. We want to inform the user how much they would save in the future with a certain budget, or how long it may take them to pay larger amounts of money.
