🚀 About the Project

The idea for the Smart Self-Checkout Retail System came from a very common real-life problem—long billing queues in retail stores. Almost every time we visit a store, the shopping experience is smooth until we reach the billing counter. Even for small purchases, we often end up waiting in long lines, which wastes time and reduces overall satisfaction.

This inspired us to think: “What if the billing process itself could be removed or simplified?” That’s how we came up with the idea of enabling customers to scan products and complete payments directly from their own devices, making the entire checkout process faster and more efficient.

💡 Inspiration

Our main inspiration was the growing shift towards automation and contactless experiences in modern applications. Platforms like Blinkit have made online shopping extremely fast, but offline retail still relies heavily on traditional checkout systems.

We wanted to bring the same speed and convenience of online shopping into physical stores. In simple terms, our goal was:

Offline Shopping+Technology=Faster Checkout Experience 🛠️ How We Built It

We developed a system where users can:

Enter a store and select it in the app Scan product barcodes using their phone camera Automatically add items to a digital cart Apply coupons and view total cost Make payments digitally Receive a QR/PDF receipt for exit verification 🔧 Tech Stack: Frontend: React Native / Web Backend: Node.js + Express Database: Supabase Barcode Scanning: Camera-based libraries PDF Generation: jsPDF

The system follows a simple architecture:

User→Frontend→Backend→Database→Response 📚 What We Learned

While building this project, we gained hands-on experience in:

Full-stack development (frontend + backend integration) Real-time data handling and API design Database management using Supabase Implementing barcode scanning and payment flow Designing user-friendly UI/UX

We also learned how to think from a user’s perspective, focusing on reducing friction and improving experience.

⚠️ Challenges We Faced Barcode Data Mapping: Not all products are available in public databases, so we had to design a custom product database system. Real-Time Cart Updates: Ensuring smooth and instant updates in the cart required proper state management. Payment Flow Simulation: Integrating and handling payment success/failure scenarios required careful handling. Security Concerns: Preventing misuse (like skipping payment) led us to implement QR-based receipt verification. 🌟 Final Outcome

The final system successfully demonstrates a queue-free shopping experience where users can scan, pay, and exit without waiting.

“Scan • Pay • Go — transforming retail into a smarter, faster experience.”

This project not only solves a real-world problem but also has strong potential to be scaled into a real-world retail solution.
