Inspiration
This program seeks to alleviate student stress by reimagining academic planning as a pop star's rise to stardom. Through pop-culture caricatures and a game-like interface, students can plan their future with a touch of whimsy. We wanted to relate the college experience to something we believe our generation would enjoy-- pop stars!
What it does
An AI-driven academic “manager” that helps college students track degree requirements, course offerings, and schedules to hit specific goals like internships, scholarship, or skill building through the lens of a pop stardom. By analyzing onboarding data and chat histories, the program offers personalized suggestions to users and an interactive dashboard, using a pop-culture inspired concept to motivate students to reach for the stars.
How we built it
We divided into two teams: frontend and backend.
The frontend team was managed by John and Karina. John headed concept development and sprite creation while Karina acted as primary UI/UX developer in Figma. Together, they created a working prototype of the "Pegasus Pop" planner.
Team backend utilized AI and SQL to create the features in the planner. Chanelle attempted to apply Gemini as an automation tool, finding schedule corrections and insights for students. Lara demonstrated SQL fundamentals by implementing a schema using PostgreSQL for the backend database and storing relevant student/course information.
Challenges we ran into
Database:
- Developing a high functioning relation schema
- Connecting the database to achieve functional API and database interaction
UI/UX:
- Poor graphics quality due to insufficient planning
- Creating responsive page transitions
AI challenges:
- Accessing multimodal data
- Having accurate UCF catalog data that reflects requirements based on major
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- John: Able to practice technical writing and creating a fully fleshed out Product Requirements Page.
- Lara: Successfully created a PostgreSQL database and implemented a foreign key across tables in the database.
- Shanelle: Making a product that our team enjoyed working on. Taking the opportunity to try something new.
- Karina: Practiced working with components and states within Figma.
What we learned
For our team, this was 2/4 of the members first hackathon. We ended up learning a lot within our own respective roles and many of us practiced using new technologies for the first time. We are proud of what we were able to accomplish within this limited time and hope to improve on our skills for next time!
What's next for Pegasus Pop
In the future, we hope to fully implement Pegasus Pop with a working frontend and backend. There is also potential for future features such as connecting our database with the AI, connecting to Canvas, notifications, and more.
