Inspiration

As a scientist, I’ve experienced firsthand how peer review is a major bottleneck in publishing. It is a high-effort, unpaid task that drains researchers' time. I built Peerspective to automate the heavy lifting, allowing experts to focus on the science rather than the administrative audit.

What it does

Peerspective is a split-screen workstation that acts as an extra set of eyes. It cross-references text with figures to ensure data consistency, uses real-time search to verify novelty, and checks for conflicts of interest. To match professional workflows, it drafts separate reports for authors and editors. It also explains its reasoning and if further doubt arises, there is a chat assistant that can answer questions about the paper.

How we built it

We used Gemini 3.0 Pro/Flash and Gemini 2.5 Flash for their ability to "see" charts and reason across long documents (multimodality). We used Google AI Studio to create the app.

Challenges we ran into

Frontend development isn't my primary skill, so building a professional UI was a hurdle. However, by using the Gemini 3 Pro as a collaborative partner, I was able to build a solid, functional prototype that looks and feels like a professional tool.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The prototype actually works! The most rewarding moment was testing Peerspective on one of my own published papers. It didn’t just summarize the work; it provided truly insightful feedback and caught nuances that proved the agent's potential. It also flagged it as possible plagiarism XD

What we learned

We learned that the quality of an AI-assisted scientific review highly depends on prompt engineering. Moving from a general response to a rigorous academic critique requires highly structured instructions to ensure the AI remains objective and precise.

What's next for Peerspective

The next step is to take Peerspective out of the lab and test it in real-life journal situations. We want to see how it performs during live review cycles and continue refining the agent to handle even more complex scientific formats.
