Inspiration

When we were given the prompt for the hackathon, we all thought of how we struggle with our personal health and wellness. When the workload of school gets too much, it's hard to manage the stress and ensure we keep our mental health in check. This inspired us to create our idea and have a personal connection with the PEEL app.

What it does

Our app designed to help improve students' mental health and well-being. Users are able to reflect on their day, look back at past logs and receive personalised suggestions through ChatGPT. It allows users to see how they've dealt with adversity in the past and offers advice. The progress features give users the opportunity to visualise their improvements over time.

How we built it

We used Figma to design the web pages and how the app will flow. The prototype feature allowed us to create a wireframe of the functionality and features working. We also researched the features and tested using html, js and css.

Challenges we ran into

Our very first challenge was that two of our group members were not able to join our team, causing us to fall two man short from the beginning. To make matters worse, another team member's laptop broke hours before the starting day, causing him to not be able to help at his best capability. Other than this, time constraint was a big challenge that we had to deal with, which is expected in a hackathon. However, we made sure to put all our team effort together and create something we are proud to show.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really proud of how we made a working prototype to present to others who could be potentially interested. We really enjoyed how we were able to plan out a full tech stack that we would use to accomplish our tasks. Also the video was crafted pretty well with a very good flow between the video.

What we learned

We learned how important the UI design process is. Because of time constraints and other team member issues, we realized pretty early that we had to make a choice between developing a plain application or spending lots of time on the design. This was our first time dedicating all of our time into conducting intensive research behind every single UI feature and it really opened our eyes in how important this step is. There are so many small details that can take an application from looking good, too looking great. We as a team definitely learned that the visual look is just as, if not, more important than the backend of an application.

What's next for PEEL

Fully developing the application out. Training a large language model to better handle situations with mental health responses from certified psychologists.
