The Pedantry Story:
Inspiration:
We are driven by our fervent passion for spelling. From this springs a desire to see the English language done justice, most crucially in the articles of the bastion of information dissemination that is BBC News.
What it does:
Helps to quantify and categorise the spelling accuracy of BBC reporting. Solving the problem you never knew you had..
How we built it:
Data scraped from BBC website and passed through a range of spell-checkers and other steps to determine errors. Written in Python.
Challenges we ran into:
Turns out it can be quite tricky to determine what is a spelling mistake.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We found mistakes. Indeed, more than a few - and some more interesting than others.
What we learned along the way:
The BBC is not infallible in their writing. Now with the help of our code we can tell you where and by how much they lack in their spelling accuracy. I know, stunning indeed!
What's next for Pedantry?:
We will add functionality through the completion of a GUI which allows the user to navigate through a range of data visualisation features. Hopefully the BBC will be knocking on our door as soon as they learn of the wonderful capabilities of Pedantry.
