Inspiration
We love to bike. Biking is a popular mode of transportation, reducing carbon footprint and promoting physical fitness! However, biking on busy streets can be dangerous, both for bicyclists, as well as other traffic. We wanted to provide a convenient and accessible way for bicyclists to get the safest possible route to their destination.
The story of Stephen from INRIX (enthusiast for commuting by bike) inspired us to incorporate Green Lanes, the protected biking lanes established in many major cities, into our optimal route calculation.
What it does
We created a cross-platform app that will provide navigation to cyclists using the most bike-friendly paths. PedalPals aims to address this safety issue by creating the safest bike route using traffic levels, construction, and crash data. In addition, we also prioritize routes using Green Lanes, to provide the best possible cycling experience!
How we built it
Using a Flutter/Dart framework on Android Studio Code and utilizing MapBox's API
Challenges we ran into
- Downloading and setting up things
- Trouble setting up Google Maps integration
- Confusion about where to add API keys
- The map would not display!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our wireframes!
- Building an app
- Using APIs and MapBox
- Displaying a map and route!
What we learned
- Lots about APIs, how to set up access keys
- How to build using Flutter
What's next for PedalPal - Bake Safer!
- Using INRIX's traffic/construction/crash data
- Integrating biking green lanes into optimal route calculation
- Giving users the ability to search up destination names
