Inspiration
We decided to create Pecunia because both of us have had a passion for investing and business. Ethan has been a longtime investor, doing so for many, many years, and generating over $4,000 of profit from his time doing so, and plans on starting an Investment Club at school. Aryan on the other hand has been trying to learn investing practices, but found it difficult to learn. Both of the two have been programmers for a while and also have a passion for coding and technology. At the center of this was Pecunia, a website that could teach kids and teens that principles of investing without difficulty. With knowledge of personal finance, especially investing, kids can grow up financially stable and comfortable. However, there were not any webisites that provided a good financial education directed to children. While websites like Investopedia were certainly informative, they would not be digestable by a kid trying to learn about investing, and thus, we knew what we had to do.
What it does
Pecunia is an educational website that provides lessons and educational facilities for children to learn the principles of investing. Things like what stocks are, how trading works, and much more are included within the site's information. The website was designed to be simple enough that those of all ages could understand, so that kids could learn the topics with ease, without being deterred by the complex language and lingo that comes with such subjects.
How we built it
We developed Pecunia through HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We both have had some experience with the language from the past year, but we wanted to push ourselves to learn more about the languages and improve and expand our knowledge, becoming better programmers and web developers.
Challenges we ran into
A very large challenge that we ran into was a lack of time. Compared to past 24-hour hackathons, the 14-hour window allotted was in the end not enough to make a perfect final product. Additionally, it restricted our time to learn more about Javascript and expand our knowledge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of are our design. We tried to make the design simple and child friendly so that kids would enjoy our website. We used light colors to encourage happiness. We used a green because of its relationship with money
What we learned
We learned that working under a time constraint with coding can be challenging and we learned about the lack of informational resources for children.
What's next for Pecunia - Investing for Kids
We plan to add more lessons to expand the knowledge of our visitors.
