Inspiration
In Vancouver, we are lucky to be surrounded by local markets, seafood vendors, and farms. As students we noticed that most people around us fall into habit of shopping from large supermarket chains such as Costco, Walmart, Superstore, which import foods full of preservatives from faraway distribution centres - ultimately selling less fresh food. We wanted to build an app like "Yelp" to encourage healthy grocery choices and simultaneously support local grocers and farmers.
What it does
Peas of Mind is an web application that allows users to leave reviews of different fruits, vegetables, and seafood weekly so that users will be able to find local grocery stores that have the freshest groceries compared to large supermarket chains. One feature allows users to shop fresh seasonal products, while our Map page highlight popular vendors in walkable radius, or just search the product to find which store(s) have the freshest product.
How we built it
Back end
- Node.js
- Express.js
- Google Maps API Front end
- React Database
- CockroachDB Design
- Figma
Challenges we ran into
Working with a new tech stack was a learning curve for some people. Ambitious platform involving user identification, customized feeds, search engines, and review processes. This led to a major time constraint where we found it difficult to juggle all of these challenges on top of dealing with typical coding bugs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We think the concept of our web application builds community engagement for local small businesses, promotes excitement around health and nutrition when grocery shopping. We are also proud of the design for the web application because it's simple and effective, which will make the app easy for users to use.
What we learned
We learnt that it is always helpful to take a step back when we run into problems or bugs, lean on each other for help, and not be scared of asking mentors or others for help or feedback on our project.
What's next for Peas of Mind
At the time of writing, we have all the components for the app but we need more time to tie things together, and fully build out our design. We would like to build it out specifically for the community of Vancouver.
