POW Project Story: Knowledge Exchange, Perfectly Balanced
Inspiration We started POW because we kept hitting walls when trying to connect with professionals for advice. Remember asking someone for a "quick coffee chat" on LinkedIn and never hearing back? That's the problem we faced too.
Here's what we noticed: knowledge sharing today is broken. On apps like Quora and Reddit, a few experts burn out answering endless questions while most users just take. On LinkedIn, it's all about selling yourself, not genuine help. We'd ask for advice but felt like we were begging - and who wants to keep helping if they get nothing back?
This is what experts call the "cold start problem" - the chicken-and-egg issue where you need both sides to make a network work, but getting both sides is hard. At Uber, Andrew Chen saw this too: drivers won't join without riders, riders won't join without drivers.
We thought: what if knowledge sharing worked like a fair conversation between friends? Where everyone both gives and gets value? That's how POW was born - to make knowledge exchange feel natural, balanced, and human again.
What it does POW solves the broken Q&A model by making sure everyone both asks AND answers questions. No more one-sided relationships.
Here's how it works in real life:
- You ask a question (must start with HOW/WHAT/WHY - no "Can you help me?" dead ends)
- You get matched with someone who knows the answer (not a bot, a real person)
- You chat for 72 hours (enough time for real help, not endless messaging)
- You rate each other (like a handshake after a good conversation)
- You unlock your next question (tickets are reusable after a chat completes)
Simple example: You ask "How do successful Startups in Singapore build strategic partnerships?" → get matched with someone who's done it → chat for 3 days → rate each other → unlock your next question.
POW creates real connections where everyone wins - no experts burning out, no askers feeling ignored. Just good conversations that help people make better decisions.
How we built it We kept things simple and focused: • Tech choice: Built with Flutter for both iOS and Android with a single codebase • Monetization: Used RevenueCat for subscriptions (POW+ at $6.99/month) to handle billing seamlessly • Notifications: OneSignal for smart alerts that keep conversations alive • Design: Clean interface with Humaaans illustrations (no real photos to avoid bias) • Backend: A specialized third-party service that handles our matching logic and user data The magic is in the details: • 3 free tickets to ask questions (1 ticket = 1 question) • Tickets are reusable after each chat completes (no need to earn new ones unless users want to ask more than 3 questions) • Watch 1 ad per day for 2 extra free tickets • Unlimited tickets with POW+ subscription • 72-hour chat window that auto-closes (respects everyone's time) • Leaderboards based on real helpfulness (not followers) We focused on what makes POW special: the balance between giving and getting help.
Challenges we ran into Building a balanced knowledge app had some tricky moments: The fairness problem: At first, some users just wanted to ask questions without helping others. We fixed this by making the system inherently balanced. You can't keep asking without engaging in the community.
The timing problem: We learned that 72 hours is the sweet spot, long enough for real help, but short enough to prevent burnout. Anything longer and experts felt trapped; anything shorter and conversations felt rushed.
The bias problem: We almost used real profile photos, but testing showed it made POW feel like a dating app. Switching to simple illustrations kept the focus on knowledge, not appearances.
The matching problem: Creating a system that connects people based on relevant expertise required careful internal testing and refinement.
Each challenge taught us something valuable about building a truly balanced knowledge network.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud of these real wins: ✅ Created true balance: A system where everyone both asks and answers questions ✅ Solved the cold start problem: No more one-sided dynamics where experts quit ✅ Made it feel human: No bots, no algorithms. Just real people helping each other ✅ Launched with a clear purpose: Focused on meaningful knowledge exchange Most importantly, we've heard feedback from potential users say things like: "this is going to be helpful to meet relevant experts to get my questions answered" and "Great value exchange in the making." That's what POW is all about - making knowledge exchange feel fair and human again.
What we learned Building POW taught us some valuable lessons: 💡 Balance creates engagement: When everyone contributes, the community thrives 💡 Time limits create focus: 72-hour chats reduce burnout and keep conversations meaningful 💡 Neutrality builds trust: Using illustrations instead of photos keeps the focus on knowledge, not appearances 💡 Simplicity works best: A clean interface with clear rules creates better experiences 💡 Quality beats quantity: Fewer, more meaningful exchanges are better than many shallow ones
Most importantly, we learned that when everyone both gives and gets value, knowledge flows freely. It's not about building the biggest platform, it's about building the right kind of platform. What's next for PoW, Pearl of Wisdom
Our next steps are focused and realistic: 🔹 Launch officially in September 2025 with English-only for Southeast Asia and South Korea 🔹 Grow organically through word-of-mouth and referral networks 🔹 Track our North Star Metric: % of users who both ask AND answer questions 🔹 Add subtle gamification that rewards helpfulness without gaming the system 🔹 Expand to 1-2 new categories based on what users actually ask about
We're not chasing hype or quick growth. We're building a sustainable knowledge exchange where every question leads to a real connection. Long-term, we'll explore business tools, but for now, it's all about getting the balance right.
